Why Frac'd Earth
Coming from a background in war gaming and card games such as Magic the Gathering and VS it seemed like a natural mix to incorporate both into a card driven system with a field or distance dimension. Since all players use the same basic deck of 54 poker cards, it is the crew selection that adds specific buffs and de-buffs to your strategy with the added component of field positioning of your crew figures.
I also wanted the game to be financially accessible to everyone so keeping entry costs as low as possible was also a priority.
The playing field can be anywhere you have room to set up. The field scenery can be anything you have from other games or Do It Yourself style (my first game purchases consisted of two boxes of Airfix figures and a bag of lichen for constructing bushes and trees).
Crew figures may be whatever you have available; miniatures, card stock art, or tokens with their front and back facings clearly marked.
A ruler or tape measure and whatever you have for information markers to track changes in the condition of figures or the field.
A deck of poker cards for each player. I bought a package of two decks with one red backing and one blue for one dollar at the appropriately named Dollar Store.
Here's a look at some of the customized cards used in play.
A full deck is contained in the Force Cards.PDF. Next I'll discuss how these are used to resolve Challenges and Checks during play.
